Central Texas Braces for Heat, Midweek Storms, and a Fall Weekend Ahead

Central Texas steps into a warm stretch of October weather today, with temperatures climbing into the 90s both this afternoon and again on Wednesday. While most communities will stay dry, a few isolated storms — about a 20% chance — may pop up across Central Texas later today. For perspective, the normal high for this date is 80 degrees in Dallas–Fort Worth and 82 degrees in Waco, underscoring just how unseasonably warm this air mass remains.

By Wednesday, the atmosphere becomes a bit more unsettled. A 20–40% chance of isolated thunderstorms will develop across much of the region as moisture deepens and weak disturbances ripple overhead. Western North Texas will see the most active weather Wednesday night into Thursday, where isolated to scattered storms could bring a 20–60% chance of rain.

The bigger change arrives Thursday night into Friday. A cold front — the kind that signals the true arrival of fall — will sweep through the region, ushering in gusty winds on Friday and a refreshing drop in temperatures for the weekend.

South Central Texas: Heat, Humidity, and a Midweek Flood Risk

Farther south, the Austin and San Antonio areas will contend with unseasonably hot and humid conditions today. Morning clouds will gradually thin into partly cloudy skies, but the heat will hold firm. Highs will range from the upper 80s to upper 90s, with heat index values pushing as high as 107 degrees. Most locations will stay rain-free, though a few isolated showers may develop along the coastal plains.

A more serious concern emerges midweek. A Level 2 of 4 risk for heavy rainfall targets the Southern Edwards Plateau — especially Val Verde County — late Wednesday into Thursday and continuing into Friday. Up to two inches of rain may fall, and flash flooding is possible. Emergency managers urge residents to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings as conditions evolve.

Warm, humid weather will persist through Thursday before the cold front arrives Friday. Behind it, temperatures will tumble into the 70s during the day and into the 50s overnight. The Hill Country may trend even cooler. North winds will turn breezy Friday into Saturday, adding to the fall-like feel. Periodic rain chances will linger each day, with the heaviest rainfall potential remaining focused on Val Verde County and surrounding areas.
