Celebrate AANHPI Month with Kumihimo at Austin Public Library

This May, the Austin Public Library invites the community to celebrate Asian, Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a hands‑on creative experience rooted in centuries of tradition. As part of the library’s AANHPI programming, artist Juliann Krute will lead “Celebrate AANHPI: Make Your Own Kumihimo,” an immersive workshop introducing participants to the elegant Japanese art of cord braiding.

Kumihimo — which translates to “gathered threads” — has been practiced in Japan for generations. Historically, these intricate braids were used in samurai armor, Buddhist temple adornments, and later as decorative cords for kimono. Today, kumihimo continues to inspire makers around the world, blending beauty, function, and meditative craftsmanship.

In this workshop, adults will learn two or three foundational braid patterns, perfect for creating jewelry, wrist straps, plant hangers, or simply exploring a new creative outlet. Participants are encouraged to bring yarn or embroidery floss to transform into a one‑of‑a‑kind braided piece. No prior crafting experience is required — just curiosity and a willingness to try something new.

This program is part of The Crafty Adult, a monthly series designed for anyone who loves to make things — or wishes they did. Each month highlights a different craft, offering a welcoming space to learn, experiment, and create.
