Yesterday’s episode of The Voice of Texas Veterans with Julia Conner turned its focus to a group whose service and sacrifice continue to shape the state and the nation: the women veterans of Texas. The program highlighted the work of the Texas Veterans Commission’s Women Veterans Program, whose mission is to ensure that women veterans have equitable access to the federal and state benefits they have earned.
The Women Veterans Program plays a vital role across Texas by educating and informing women veterans about available services, advocating on their behalf, and elevating public awareness of their contributions. The program also works to identify emerging needs, recognize and honor women veterans in communities statewide, and make legislative recommendations aimed at improving quality of life for women veterans and their families.
Julia Conner welcomed Dr. Krystle Matthews, Director of the Women Veterans Program, along with team members Dolores Mendiola, Sharron Stewart, and Melissa Harcrow. Together, they discussed the program’s ongoing efforts, the challenges women veterans often face when navigating benefits systems, and the importance of creating spaces where women veterans feel seen, supported, and heard.
With Women Veterans Day approaching on June 12, the team also highlighted the many celebrations and recognition events taking place across Texas. These gatherings honor the more than 200,000 women veterans who call Texas home — the largest population of women veterans in the country.
