What can plants teach us about protecting our food, water, and environment? As Joshua Imonmion explains, quite a lot.

In this edition of Local Spotlight, we visit with Joshua, a researcher and member of the Agriculture Department at Central Texas College. His journey has taken him from Nigeria to Central Texas, with experiences that include work with the United Nations Environment Programme and research into using plants to help address biological waste.

Joshua discusses efforts to strengthen crops, extend their productive growth, and help them withstand challenging weather conditions. He also shares an important lesson from the scientific world: results that do not meet expectations are not necessarily failures. Each experiment provides new information that can help guide the next question, discovery, or solution.

His story first reached KNCT through our own business analyst, Ysela Yonak, a devoted plant mom with more than 100 plants and a journal entry for each one. Through her donations of plant cuttings and previously used pots to the Agriculture Department, Ysela met Joshua and discovered that he was also a KNCT listener. One fascinating conversation led to another, and we knew his story belonged on Local Spotlight.

Help the CTC Agriculture Department Grow

The Central Texas College Agriculture Department welcomes donations of useful plant and gardening supplies. Plants, cuttings, pots, potting soil, and other growing materials can support its greenhouse, horticulture classes, and hands-on student learning.

Anyone interested in making a supply donation is encouraged to contact the department before bringing items to campus.

The department also operates a greenhouse where students grow plants that are offered for sale during the year. KNCT will announce the next plant sale date as soon as the information becomes available, so stay tuned!
