A First Look at Harlingen’s Future Military Museum

A new chapter in South Texas military heritage is beginning to take shape, and visitors can now experience the first glimpse of it. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) and the Marine Military Academy (MMA) have opened a temporary visitor center in Harlingen, offering an early preview of a future state‑of‑the‑art military museum planned for the site.

Located at 320 Iwo Jima Blvd., the temporary center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Inside, guests will find a curated sampling of what the forthcoming heritage complex will showcase — a blend of history, honor, and the enduring legacy of military service in South Texas.

A Historic Building with a New Mission

The future museum will be anchored by the historic Wing Headquarters/Operations Building, originally constructed for the Harlingen Army Air Field. The structure is now undergoing a full refurbishment to become the administrative and interpretive hub for the new complex. Once restoration is complete, development will shift toward building the full visitor experience — a modern heritage center designed to guide guests toward one of the region’s most iconic landmarks.

The Iwo Jima Monument: A Living Legacy

While construction continues, visitors can explore the famed Iwo Jima Monument, a powerful centerpiece of the MMA campus. Sculpted by Dr. Felix W. de Weldon nearly a decade after World War II, the monument in Harlingen is the original cast used to create the national memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. Gifted to the Marine Military Academy in 1981, it remains one of the most significant military sculptures in the country — a solemn reminder of sacrifice, courage, and the Marines who raised the flag on Mount Suribachi.

The temporary visitor center also features a gift shop with military‑themed items, allowing guests to take home a piece of the site’s history while supporting the museum’s development.

Looking Ahead to 2028

The full heritage center is slated to open by summer 2028, marking a major milestone for Harlingen, the MMA, and the Texas Historical Commission. When complete, the complex will serve as a gateway to the monument and a comprehensive educational experience honoring the region’s deep military roots.
