Bike Month is in full gear across Austin, and the city’s cycling community showed up strong for Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 15. From early‑morning commuters to casual riders joining friends and coworkers, thousands of Austinites chose two wheels to start their day—and helped turn the annual celebration into one of the city’s most energized mornings of the year.
What began as a nationwide event has grown steadily in Austin as more residents embrace biking for transportation, recreation, and community. This year, more than 40 fueling stations popped up across the city, offering riders free coffee, snacks, and plenty of swag to keep spirits high. By day’s end, the City recorded nearly 10,000 bike trips, a clear sign that cycling continues to gain momentum in the capital city.
At City Hall—the hub of Friday’s main event—bike commuters gathered on the plaza for breakfast tacos, coffee, and a chance to connect with fellow riders. District 8 City Council Member Paige Ellis and Austin Transportation and Public Works Assistant Director Anna Martin shared remarks, celebrating the city’s progress and reaffirming Austin’s commitment to building a safer, more connected bike network.
That commitment is already visible on the ground. In recent months, the City has completed several major mobility projects, including the Wishbone Bridge, the Unity Underpass, and new shared‑use paths along Airport Boulevard. More improvements are underway across Austin, including a significant project on Congress Avenue that will expand pedestrian space and upgrade bikeways along downtown’s central corridor.
As Bike Month continues, Austinites can look forward to more community rides, workshops, and celebrations throughout May. Whether you’re a daily commuter, a weekend rider, or someone dusting off a bike for the first time in years, there’s still plenty of time to join in.
