On this day in 1962, the Beach Boys were signed to Capitol Records. The group’s first successful album was ” Surfin’ Safari,” topping the charts and catapulting them to stardom. Originally named The Pendletones after the popular clothing brand, they changed their name after signing to Capitol Records.

The group’s original line up consisted of Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, and, Al Jardine. Their vocal harmonies and easy surf music made them one of the most influential bands of the rock era. The band’s sound came from many inspirations including jazz, R&B, and 1950’s rock and roll. Brian would even include classical music and creative innovation when composing songs.
