Local Spotlight: Killeen Invites Residents to “Disconnect to Reconnect” on Unplug Texas Day

As fall settles into Central Texas, the City of Killeen is encouraging residents to take a meaningful pause — to step away from screens, slow down, and reconnect with the people around them. On Wednesday, October 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., the second annual Unplug Texas Day returns to Long Branch Park, offering a technology‑free evening designed to strengthen community bonds and support mental wellness.

Unplug Texas Day is built around a simple idea: when we set aside our devices, we make space for genuine conversation, shared laughter, and the kind of face‑to‑face connection that nourishes a community. Families, friends, and neighbors are invited to gather outdoors, breathe a little deeper, and enjoy time together without the constant pull of notifications.

🎨 A Creative Partnership to Bring People Together

This year’s event features a special collaboration with Painting with a Twist, bringing a hands‑on creative experience to the park. Participants of all skill levels — from first‑time painters to seasoned artists — are welcome to join a complimentary painting session. The first 100 attendees will receive a pre‑drawn canvas kit, giving everyone a chance to take home a personal piece of the evening.

The partnership adds a new layer of connection to Unplug Texas Day: shared creativity, relaxed conversation, and the joy of making something together.

🌳 A Moment for Wellness and Community Spirit

City leaders hope residents will use the event as an opportunity to reset. In a world where technology is woven into nearly every part of daily life, taking intentional breaks can support mental well‑being, reduce stress, and strengthen relationships.

Unplug Texas Day offers that moment — a chance to enjoy the park, meet new neighbors, and celebrate the simple pleasure of being present.
