August has taken on a special meaning in Killeen, where Animal Services is calling on residents to help “Clear the Shelters” and give pets across the city the chance to begin new lives with loving families. For the second year, the shelter is participating in the national Clear the Shelters campaign, a month‑long effort that has already changed the lives of more than a hundred animals.
Since beginning its campaign in July, 102 pets have been adopted, each one finding a home thanks to waived adoption fees and a community eager to make a difference. With the campaign running through Aug. 31, staff hope to see even more families step forward.
“Every adoption means one more animal gets a second chance at a loving home,” said Amanda Moore, Killeen Animal Services manager. “We encourage our community to come meet the pets in our care and see if there is a match. Even if you are not ready to adopt, sharing information about available pets can help us reach someone who is.”
A Shelter Full of Possibilities
Killeen Animal Services cares for dogs, cats, and other animals, each one waiting for the right person to walk through the door. Adopted pets receive vaccinations, deworming, and a microchip—important first steps toward a healthy future. The shelter, located at 3118 Commerce Drive, welcomes visitors Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Residents can browse available pets and learn more about the adoption process at killeentexas.gov/animals.
More Ways to Help
Not everyone can adopt, and the shelter understands that. Volunteers, foster families, and even those who simply share posts about adoptable pets play a vital role in helping animals find homes. Every effort—big or small—brings the shelter closer to its goal.
“Clearing the shelter is about more than numbers. It is about giving each animal the opportunity to become part of a family,” Moore said. “We hope our community will help make this August a month of second chances.”
A Community Effort
Clear the Shelters is more than a campaign—it’s a reminder of how powerful community compassion can be. As August continues, Killeen Animal Services invites residents to visit, volunteer, foster, or simply spread the word. Every action helps open the door to a brighter future for a pet in need.
