For three days next week, a familiar stretch of North 10th Street will briefly fall quiet as crews step in to modernize essential infrastructure beneath the pavement.

From Tuesday, Aug. 11, through Thursday, Aug. 13, the City of Killeen Engineering Department will close N. 10th Street between Avenue F and Avenue G to through traffic from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. While the detour may slow the morning commute, the work represents an important investment in the city’s long‑term safety and reliability.

The temporary closure allows a private contractor, working on behalf of Atmos Energy, to upgrade gas infrastructure serving the surrounding neighborhood. To complete the project, personnel and heavy equipment must access the roadway directly — a task that requires a controlled work zone and careful traffic management.

City officials emphasize that a full traffic control plan will be in place throughout the project. Drivers will be guided around the closure, but they should expect delays, obey posted signs, and use extra caution when traveling near the work area.
