As Austin prepares to celebrate Independence Day and our nation’s 250th birthday, the City is adjusting its operations for the long holiday weekend. Today, most City of Austin administrative offices and municipal facilities will close in observance of the holiday. This includes the Municipal and Community Courts, all library branches, museums, cultural centers, recreation centers, and senior centers. Normal business hours will resume on Monday, July 6.
Even with the closures, several essential city services will continue uninterrupted:
Austin Utilities Payments Residents can still manage their utility accounts throughout the holiday. Payments may be made online at coautilities.com, by phone at 1‑833‑375‑4949, or in person at participating H‑E‑B, Fiesta Mart, Randall’s, and Walmart locations.
Austin Resource Recovery – Curbside Collections Trash, recycling, compost, and brush collections will run on their regular schedules. Customers can confirm pickup days through the Austin Recycles app or at austintexas.gov/myschedule. While the Recycle and Reuse Center will be closed, Austin Water’s Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant will remain open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for yard trimmings and large brush drop‑off.
Parks and Recreation Department City parks, golf courses, tennis centers, cemeteries, year‑round pools, and splash pads will be open for holiday visitors. Hours vary by location, so residents are encouraged to check the Parks and Recreation and Park Closures pages for the latest updates. Offices, recreation centers, and senior centers will be closed.
Austin Animal Services The shelter will operate under normal hours on Friday, July 3, but will close on Saturday, July 4. Regular hours resume Sunday, July 5.
As festivities begin, the City reminds residents that the possession and use of fireworks—other than sparklers and small hand‑held novelties—are illegal within Austin city limits unless part of a permitted professional display. Fireworks complaints and other non‑emergency issues should be reported to Austin 3‑1‑1 via the mobile app or online request system. Community members may also file a complaint against a known individual for illegal fireworks use through the City’s complaint process.
For those who may need assistance during the holiday, the City encourages residents to use the following public resources:
- Power outages: Report at outagemap.austinenergy.com or call 512‑322‑9100
- Water or wastewater emergencies: Call 512‑972‑1000
- Library services: Digital resources remain available at the Austin Public Library website
As Austin gathers to celebrate Independence Day, these updates help ensure residents stay informed, safe, and connected throughout the holiday weekend.
