As Central Texas gears up for Independence Day celebrations, the City of Austin is once again putting safety at the forefront. This weekend, the Austin Police Department’s Lake Patrol Unit will enforce the annual holiday ban on personal watercraft on Lake Austin—an effort designed to protect the thousands of residents and visitors who flock to the water during the Fourth of July festivities.
Beginning at sunset on Friday, July 3, and lasting until sunrise on Sunday, July 5, jet skis, wet bikes, motorized surfboards, and similar sit‑, stand‑, or kneel‑operated devices will be prohibited on Lake Austin under City Ordinance 8‑5‑81. The restriction does not apply to kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, or traditional watercraft where operators sit or stand inside the vessel.
City officials say the temporary ban is a proven safety measure. With heavy holiday traffic on the lake and in surrounding parks, limiting high‑speed, highly maneuverable watercraft helps reduce collisions, reckless operation, and emergency responses. The ordinance is part of a broader set of seasonal restrictions that also apply during Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.
Throughout the holiday period, APD Lake Patrol officers will maintain an active presence on the water. Boaters are urged to follow the Texas Water Safety Act and all City of Austin boating laws, operate at safe and reasonable speeds, and report reckless behavior or emergencies by calling 9‑1‑1. The Austin Parks and Recreation Department joins APD in encouraging residents to enjoy the lakes and parks responsibly, reminding everyone that a safe celebration is a successful celebration.
The ordinance also outlines additional rules for Lake Austin, including staying to the right side of the lake when operating motorboats—except when assisting a downed water skier—and maintaining speeds appropriate for conditions.
As families prepare for fireworks, barbecues, and time on the water, Austin officials hope these safety measures will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable holiday for all. Whether paddling, cruising, or simply relaxing along the shoreline, visitors are encouraged to celebrate responsibly and keep Lake Austin safe throughout the Independence Day weekend.
