Texas Parks and Wildlife Unveils New Riverside Rally Loop Paddling Trail in Bay City

On yesterday’s episode of On the Dock, Rick Smith spotlighted an exciting announcement from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD): the launch of the state’s 91st paddling trail, located at Riverside Park in Bay City.

TPWD will officially open the new Riverside Rally Loop Paddling Trail on April 25, with a ribbon‑cutting ceremony and grand‑opening celebration—Rally on the River—scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday. The trail offers a designated, mapped route ideal for kayaks and canoes, giving paddlers a fresh way to explore the natural beauty of the Colorado River.

“TPWD is excited about the addition of the Riverside Rally Loop Paddling Trail at Riverside Park,” said Holly Grand, Texas Paddling Trails coastal team lead. “This section of the Colorado River is quiet and wildlife is abundant, making it a great stop for anglers, birders and outdoor enthusiasts.”

The new seven‑mile round‑trip loop begins at Riverside Park and winds upriver toward the LCRA Dam, offering scenic views and a peaceful paddling experience. Because it’s a loop, visitors can shorten the route for a more relaxed outing.

Along the way, paddlers will encounter colorful river‑cut cliffs, sandbars, stretches shaded by live oaks, and a variety of coastal plain plants. Wildlife watchers may spot wading birds, bald eagles, pileated woodpeckers, songbirds, and other riverside species. Anglers will also find excellent opportunities to reel in catfish, alligator gar, spotted seatrout, and red drum.

The trail is the result of a partnership between TPWD, Bay City Parks and Recreation, and Visit Bay City, all working together to expand outdoor recreation and support sustainable tourism. More information is available on the Riverside Rally Loop Paddling Trail website.
