Chicago to Host 15th International Jazz Day All‑Star Global Concert

On 30 April, the world’s spotlight turns to Chicago, where renowned musicians from across the globe will gather for the 15th International Jazz Day All‑Star Global Concert—a celebration that transcends music and speaks directly to unity, dialogue, and shared humanity.

This annual event, presented by UNESCO and the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, brings together artists and audiences from more than 190 countries, reaffirming jazz as one of the world’s most powerful cultural bridges. This year’s lineup is a testament to that global reach, featuring Gregory Porter (USA), James Morrison (Australia), Tiger Okoshi (Japan), Mandisi Dyantyis (South Africa), Antonio Sánchez (Mexico), Mino Cinélu (Martinique/France), and many more—all gathering to create a musical conversation that spans continents.

“Jazz is a universal language that transcends borders, generations, and cultures,” said Khaled El‑Enany, Director‑General of UNESCO. “It invites us to listen deeply, respect each voice, and create together in harmony.”

For Herbie Hancock, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue, this year’s celebration carries special meaning. “Bringing this global celebration to Chicago—the city where I was born and first discovered the magic of jazz—makes this moment especially meaningful,” he said. “What we have created together with UNESCO is truly extraordinary.”

A City Steeped in Jazz History

Chicago’s role as host is more than symbolic. It was here that Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, and countless others shaped the sound that would become modern jazz. From 1 April to 3 May, the city honors that legacy with a rich program of performances, educational events, and community initiatives designed to showcase jazz’s enduring ability to inspire connection.

Among the highlights:

  • Chicago Jazz Orchestra at Unity Temple (28 April) Performing in the UNESCO World Heritage–listed landmark designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the orchestra will present Usonian Structures, a work by saxophonist and arranger Andy Farber, inspired by Wright’s organic design philosophy.
  • Live screening of Birdman with Antonio Sánchez (27 April) The Academy Award–winning film will be presented with its celebrated jazz score performed live by the composer, underscoring the deep relationship between jazz and cinematic storytelling.
