The Bell County Public Health District (BCPHD) has confirmed additional positive mosquito samples for West Nile Virus (WNV), including one collected in Harker Heights on November 4. While no human cases have been reported at this time, officials emphasize that the virus remains active in the region.

To help reduce mosquito populations and minimize personal risk, BCPHD recommends the following precautions:

  • Dump Water: Remove all sources of standing water around your home, including small containers like bottle caps, which can serve as breeding grounds.
  • Repel: Use EPA-approved insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Cover Up: Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Screen Up: Check and repair window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.

In response to the confirmed activity, BCPHD is coordinating enhanced mosquito control efforts, including larvicide and adulticide treatments, with local municipalities. Updates will be shared as operations progress.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and take preventive measures as cooler weather approaches. For more information and safety tips, visit the Bell County Public Health District website or follow local updates.
