Dry and breezy conditions behind a passing cold front are contributing to an elevated wildfire risk across much of the region today. Temperatures will run about 10 degrees cooler than Monday, offering a noticeable shift in the air. Winds from the northwest will gradually turn more northerly, with gusts reaching up to 20 mph.
In the Austin and San Antonio areas, residents can expect a pleasant change—cooler and less humid conditions are settling in. Highs will range from 86 to 92°F along the I-35 corridor, with the Hill Country enjoying slightly cooler temperatures between 78 and 86°F. The Rio Grande Plains will remain warmer, reaching between 83 and 96°F.
Looking ahead, rain chances increase later in the week as a storm system approaches from the west. While some strong storms are possible—bringing small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall—the overall risk of severe weather remains low. Rainfall amounts are still being refined, but areas near and east of I-35 are most likely to receive around 1 inch, while locations west of I-35 may see closer to half an inch between Thursday and Saturday.
Nationally, the Weather Prediction Center notes chilly and showery conditions across the Great Lakes, with lake-effect thunderstorm bands possible near Lake Erie through Wednesday. Meanwhile, northern New England faces windy and rainy weather today as a low-pressure system moves through. Across the northern Plains, blustery winds and scattered showers are expected, while colder air aloft may trigger lake-enhanced precipitation.
Southern Texas continues to experience near-record warmth this afternoon, with highs soaring into the 90s. Despite the dry and breezy setup, increasing Gulf moisture should help reduce fire weather concerns by Wednesday. Elsewhere, the Northwest remains dry until a weakening cold front reaches coastal areas midweek, and Florida sees a gradual decline in thunderstorm activity as a trailing front loses strength.
