Texas Game Wardens reported a mixed safety picture over the 2025 Labor Day holiday weekend, with fewer boating incidents statewide compared to last year, but a concerning increase in boating-related fatalities.

Between August 29 and September 1, wardens responded to seven boating incidents, two boating-related fatalities, and no open-water drownings. They also made seven arrests for boating while intoxicated. In contrast, the same weekend in 2024 saw nine incidents, one fatality, and one drowning.

The two fatalities this year occurred on Lake Buchanan and Lake Conroe, while last year’s single fatality was reported at Amistad Reservoir.

“We are saddened by the lives lost over the holiday weekend,” said Col. Ron VanderRoest, law enforcement director for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “Our wardens work tirelessly to prevent tragedies, but these incidents reinforce that safety on the water is a partnership, and we need the public to always practice safe and responsible boating.”

The Labor Day weekend also marked the opening of dove season, requiring game wardens to balance their responsibilities between water patrols and field enforcement.

Officials remind the public that although Labor Day traditionally signals the end of the summer boating season, safety remains critical year-round. Boaters are urged to wear life jackets, operate at safe speeds, avoid alcohol, and follow the Texas Water Safety Act to help prevent accidents and save lives.

Col. VanderRoest added, “Whether it’s on the water or in the field, Texas Game Wardens are committed to protecting Texans and conserving our state’s natural resources.”
