News From Texas Parks and Wildlife

Texas State Parks kicked off 2026 with another record‑breaking First Day Hike, and the momentum for outdoor stewardship isn’t slowing down.

This year, 86 parks hosted 181 events, drawing 12,835 hikers who logged more than 28,000 miles on New Year’s Day — the fourth straight year Texas has set new participation records. Parks like Dinosaur Valley, Palo Duro Canyon, Brazos Bend, Cedar Hill, and Palo Pinto Mountains saw especially strong turnouts as families and friends welcomed the new year on the trail.

In other Texas Park news…

February brings one of the most impactful conservation efforts on the coast: the annual Abandoned Crab Trap Removal Program. For 24 years, volunteers have helped clear nearly 45,000 derelict traps, preventing “ghost fishing” and saving an estimated 740,500 blue crabs and countless other marine species.

From Feb. 20–March 1, Texas coastal waters will close to wire‑mesh crab traps so volunteers can legally remove any abandoned gear. Facilitated volunteer events take place Feb. 21, with drop‑off sites available throughout the 10‑day window. Free tarps, gloves, and instructions are available at TPWD Coastal Fisheries field stations.

If you’d like to help protect Texas’ coastal ecosystems, this is a great way to get involved. Every trap removed makes a difference.

Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the beauty of our Texas parks — on the trails, along the coast, and everywhere in between.
