Another round of widespread showers and storms is expected across the region today as a cold front continues its gradual push south toward the Gulf Coast. Some storms may become strong, producing small hail, frequent lightning, and gusty winds. Rainfall amounts will generally range from 0.5 to 1.5 inches, with isolated totals over 3 inches possible in southeastern areas.

Despite today’s unsettled conditions, early fall weather is expected to settle in through the weekend. Morning lows will dip into the upper 50s and 60s, while afternoon highs climb into the 80s and lower 90s.

In Central Texas, including Austin and San Antonio, today begins warmer and more humid than usual. A cold front will reach northern counties by mid-morning, bringing scattered showers and storms. Rain chances may dip during midday hours but could increase again later in the day as the front moves south of San Antonio. Most populated areas like Austin, San Antonio, and Del Rio can expect sporadic rainfall totals between ¼ and ½ inch, though isolated amounts over an inch are possible northeast of a Fredericksburg–Austin–Cuero line.

A weak cold front will also bring a chance of storms to the Hill Country and areas north of Austin. Morning activity will be more widespread, with stronger storms likely developing mid-afternoon south of Austin and Kerrville. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 1 out of 5 risk for isolated severe storms, with damaging winds as the primary concern. A few storms may also produce hail and heavy rainfall.

Nationally, the Weather Prediction Center notes continued thunderstorm activity ahead of a frontal system stretching from the Northeast to the southern Plains, with flash flooding possible in parts of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. The Southwest will see renewed storm chances Thursday as moisture from Mexico moves northward. Meanwhile, cooler temperatures are expected across the south-central U.S., while the northern tier remains warmer than average.
