As mid-September unfolds, much of the southern U.S. is basking in a warm and mostly sunny start to the week, with temperatures climbing into the low to mid-90s. While isolated afternoon showers may dot the radar today, most regions will stay dry under partly to mostly sunny skies.
In Central Texas, including the Austin and San Antonio corridor, KNCT Meteorologist Bill Hecke reports a mild Monday morning with temperatures in the 60s and low 70s, accompanied by a gentle southerly breeze. The day will warm steadily, peaking in the low to mid-90s under partly cloudy skies. Winds will shift from southeast to southwest, increasing slightly to 10–15 mph by afternoon.
Regional Rain Prospects and Temperature Trends
Rain chances remain low for most of the week, but isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible near the Coastal Plains. Across the Hill Country, highs will hover in the upper 80s to near 90, while areas farther east will see temperatures in the lower to mid-90s—about 3 degrees above seasonal norms. This above-average warmth is expected to persist through the weekend and into early next week.
Meanwhile, the Red River Valley could see more consistent rain later this week, with daily chances for showers and storms increasing during the latter half. Despite these scattered systems, the broader region will maintain its warm streak, with highs continuing in the 90s.
National Weather Highlights
- Northern Plains & Rockies: Showers and thunderstorms will sweep across the northern Plains today, reloading over the central Plains by Tuesday night. The northern Rockies and High Plains will also see scattered storms triggered by an incoming upper trough.
- Mid-Atlantic Storm: A coastal low-pressure system, reminiscent of a cold-season nor’easter, is intensifying off the Southeast coast. It’s expected to bring heavy rain and gusty winds to the Mid-Atlantic states through Tuesday, with landfall likely near North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Rain will spread inland into Virginia and northward toward southern New England by Wednesday.
- Pacific Northwest Cooldown: A cold front will usher in cooler-than-normal temperatures today, followed by a warm rebound on Tuesday. Scattered thunderstorms will develop across the Rockies and into New Mexico midweek.
Heat Wave Holds in the Heartland
The Mississippi Valley remains locked in a mid-September heat wave, with highs in the mid-80s to mid-90s and some areas flirting with record temperatures. Overnight lows will also stay elevated, contributing to the lingering summer feel. Unseasonably warm conditions stretch from the Great Lakes to the Northeast, while the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic will cool slightly due to increased cloud cover and rain chances.
