The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC), a beloved destination for anglers, families, and conservationists, has temporarily closed its doors to visitors while emergency structural repairs are underway.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) announced the closure following the discovery of critical corrosion in a steel column that supports the main visitor center building. The damage, concealed behind an educational display, was traced to moisture intrusion from roof leaks—recently addressed through a full roof replacement. Though unrelated to the recent renovations of exhibits and aquaria, the compromised column posed a public safety hazard, prompting swift action.

“We have enjoyed welcoming so many visitors back to TFFC since reopening,” said Tom Lang, TFFC Director. “Unfortunately, due to this structural issue, closing TFFC is the only way to ensure the safety of the public and staff. We are working diligently to remedy the situation as quickly as possible. We look forward to once again welcoming visitors from across the country in a safe and family-friendly environment.”

Operations Continue Behind the Scenes

While public access is paused, hatchery operations and fish production at TFFC remain unaffected. Staff continue their work supporting Texas’ aquatic ecosystems and preparing for the center’s eventual reopening.

A Legacy of Learning and Conservation

For nearly 30 years, TFFC has welcomed over 1.1 million visitors to explore the wonders of Texas’ inland waterways. From hands-on fishing ponds to immersive exhibits, the center has inspired generations to connect with nature.
