Fans of Billy Joel, the legendary Piano Man, were met with unexpected news as his wife expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support following the disclosure of his brain condition. The 76-year-old singer has been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a disorder that affects hearing, vision, and balance due to a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain.
NPH is a condition that becomes more common with age, affecting 5.9% of people over 80 but only 0.003% of those under 65. It can stem from various causes, including brain tumors, head injuries, or infections. Fortunately, the condition is reversible, and Joel will undergo physical therapy as part of his treatment.
As a result of his diagnosis, Joel has canceled all planned concerts through July 2026. The decision marks a significant pause in his decades-long career, during which he has remained one of the most enduring figures in music.
Despite his health challenges, sources close to Joel emphasize that he is not ready to retire and remains committed to his passion for performing. His wife, Alexis, reassured fans that Joel is receiving excellent care and remains hopeful for recovery.
Joel’s diagnosis comes at a time when older musicians continue to dominate the touring industry. Last year, artists over 60 accounted for four of the 10 highest-grossing tours, collectively earning over $844 million.
While Joel steps away from the stage for now, his influence on music remains undeniable. Fans worldwide continue to celebrate his legacy, hoping for his eventual return to live performances.
