Two outstanding educators from Copperas Cove Independent School District (CCISD) have been recognized for their exceptional contributions to student success. Crossroads High School Principal Pat Crawley and Fairview/Jewell Elementary Teacher Barbara Coleman have been named Texas Rural Education Association’s Principal and Teacher of the Year, respectively. Their leadership and commitment to education are transforming student experiences in Copperas Cove.
As a 5th-grade math teacher at Fairview/Jewell Elementary, Barbara Coleman has revolutionized math instruction through the Building Thinking Classrooms method. This approach fosters collaborative learning and student discourse, allowing students to mentor each other, verbally justify their solutions, and engage in lively classroom discussions.
Superintendent Dr. Brent Hawkins praised Coleman’s influence, noting that her classroom has become a demonstration space where educators across the district learn from her innovative techniques. “Her willingness to share her knowledge and passion for teaching has made her a mentor to many, both on her campus and throughout the district,” he said.
Beyond her work in education, Coleman is a military veteran who actively supports the community through Bountiful Baskets, ensuring local families have access to fresh produce and healthy food options. Her positive outlook extends into her teaching philosophy, as she tells her students, “Every day is a new day.” This mindset encourages resilience and empowers students to push past challenges.
Since taking the helm at Crossroads High School in 2019, Principal Pat Crawley has introduced innovative programs that provide non-traditional students with career-focused opportunities. His leadership has boosted graduation rates and enhanced student engagement through Career & Technical Education options, a rarity for non-traditional campuses outside major metropolitan areas.
Crawley spearheaded the Inclusive Greenhouse Project & Farmers Market, integrating horticulture, business management, and community engagement into the curriculum. He also revamped Crossroads’ structure, creating a level system that motivates students to attend regularly and complete coursework in a relaxed, café-style learning environment. This initiative has led to a 25% increase in attendance and produced the largest graduating classes in the school’s history.
Reflecting on the school’s success, Crawley shared, “I am incredibly proud of the campus I have the privilege to lead, from earning an ‘A’ Rating from the TEA to being named a National Showcase School from Capturing Kids Hearts. This recognition is really a testament to the work our teachers and staff do every single day.”
Crawley’s commitment has earned Crossroads High School the prestigious Purple Star designation from the Texas Education Agency, recognizing the school’s dedication to military-connected students and their families.
Superintendent Dr. Hawkins commended both educators, emphasizing their dedication to fostering strong, supportive, and impactful learning environments. “Under Mr. Crawley’s leadership, Crossroads has transformed from a ‘C’ campus to an ‘A’ campus,” Hawkins noted. “His efforts have created an educational environment where students thrive. Likewise, Ms. Coleman’s innovative approach to math instruction has inspired both students and fellow teachers.”
Both Crawley and Coleman will be honored for their achievements by the Texas Rural Education Association at an awards ceremony in June.
Their unwavering commitment to student success, innovative education, and community involvement is shaping the future of learning in Copperas Cove, proving that passionate leadership can make a profound difference.
