After more than five decades of serving East Austin’s historically African American community, Givens District Park Pool is making a grand return with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, June 7, at 10 a.m. at 3811 E. 12th St. The event, hosted by Austin Parks and Recreation, celebrates the completion of a major redevelopment project that ensures future generations can enjoy upgraded aquatic facilities.

Originally constructed in 1958, Givens Pool has long been a cherished gathering place for families and residents in East Austin. However, in 2018, the city’s Aquatic Plan identified the aging pool as needing critical improvements. By 2019, leaks in the pool shell led to its closure. Now, after years of planning and redevelopment, the pool is ready to reopen with a fresh look and exciting new amenities.

The revamped Givens Pool features a range of state-of-the-art amenities designed to enhance the community’s aquatic experience, including:

  • Lap lane pool for fitness and recreation
  • Zero-entry activity pool tailored for toddlers
  • Spray ground features for interactive water play
  • Diving board for thrill-seekers
  • Bathhouses and family restroom for comfort and convenience
  • Training/party room for events and gatherings
  • Picnic pads with shade structures for relaxation
  • Aquatic office space to support staff and programming

The improvements reflect Austin’s commitment to maintaining high-quality public spaces while honoring the cultural significance of Givens District Park.

As the community comes together on June 7, the reopening of Givens Pool is not just about swimming—it’s about preserving history, fostering connection, and ensuring that East Austin families have a vibrant place to gather for years to come.
