For two decades, the Surviving & Thriving Cancer Retreat has served as a beacon of hope for those navigating the challenging journey of cancer. Established in 2005, this heartfelt non-profit initiative has provided a space for individuals—whether newly diagnosed or longtime survivors—to find comfort, support, and inspiration. More than just a retreat, it’s a transformative experience aimed at fostering a sense of wholeness through Body, Mind, Spirit, and Community.

This year’s retreat takes on special significance as the organization celebrates its 20th anniversary. In honor of this milestone, the theme for the 2025 retreat is “The Roaring 20s”, a nod to the era of resilience and renewal. Attendees will gather from September 19-21 at the Summers Mill Retreat & Conference Center in Belton, Texas, immersing themselves in a weekend designed to rejuvenate the soul.

At the heart of the retreat is a commitment to community and healing. Participants engage in activities that range from guided meditation sessions and nature walks to educational workshops focused on the latest treatments, nutrition, and wellness strategies. Survivors have the opportunity to share their stories, forging deep connections with others who understand their journey firsthand. The retreat’s holistic approach ensures that every individual—no matter where they are in their battle—feels empowered and uplifted.

A key leader in the retreat’s ongoing success is Board President Kathleen Brown, a Board Certified Music Therapist and professional singer. Kathleen, who was born in Colorado Springs, discovered her passion for music therapy after facing her own cancer diagnosis. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996 and again in 1997 while living in the Florida Keys. Those experiences led her to pursue Music Therapy at Sam Houston State University, and she moved to Temple, Texas, in 2000. Since then, she has played a pivotal role in organizing and attending nearly every retreat, helping survivors find solace in music and shared connection. Reflecting on the retreat’s impact, Kathleen recently told Rick Smith and Bill Hecke during the Mother’s Day episode of Sunday Gathering, “The retreat gives survivors a chance to talk things through.”

Since 2018, the retreat has proudly operated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, relying on the generosity of donors and volunteers to make this experience accessible to all survivors. The unwavering mission of Surviving & Thriving Cancer Retreat is clear: to help survivors not just endure but truly thrive in their post-cancer lives.

For those looking to be part of this life-changing event, more information can be found by contacting Kathleen at (254) 760-5623—leave a voicemail or send a text message for a callback.

As the retreat enters its 20th year, it stands as a testament to the strength, resilience, and unity of the cancer survivor community—proving that healing is not just about survival, but about finding joy and purpose in every step forward.
