Philadelphia is set to welcome thousands of librarians, authors, educators, and literary enthusiasts as the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference & Exhibition returns from June 26-30, 2025 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. As the largest library event in the world, the conference promises a dynamic lineup of speakers and engaging sessions designed to inspire and empower.
This year’s featured speakers embody the spirit of intellectual freedom and the right to read, offering exclusive insights into their literary journeys. Governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer, a New York Times bestselling author, will kick off the conference, discussing the Young Adult edition of “True Gretch: What I’ve Learned About Life, Leadership, and Everything in Between”, a witty and candid look at leadership and life lessons for young changemakers.
Legendary actor and LGBTQ+ advocate George Takei will reflect on his latest memoir, “It Rhymes with Takei”, which delves into his deeply personal journey of coming out at age 68 and the transformation that followed. Closing out the event, two-time Academy Award-winning actress Geena Davis will present “The Girl Who Was Too Big for the Page,” a powerful tale encouraging children with big dreams to carve out their own space in the world.
Additional literary icons include Dr. Brené Brown, acclaimed for her work on vulnerability and leadership; Angeline Boulley, whose thriller “Firekeeper’s Daughter” captivated young readers; Grace Lin, a celebrated children’s author and illustrator; Joe Hill, the creative force behind “Locke & Key”; and Thien Ho, the first Asian American District Attorney of Sacramento County.
Beyond its stellar lineup, the conference will serve as a hub for professional development, offering leadership programs, governance sessions, and diversity and inclusion initiatives. Attendees can look forward to more than 190 educational programs, 700 authors, and 650 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations in publishing and library services.
The Library Marketplace promises engaging activities, including book signings, interactive exhibits, and opportunities to meet authors. The ALA JobLIST Placement and Career Development Center will also provide invaluable resources such as career coaching and resume workshops.
ALA President Cindy Hohl emphasized the importance of collaboration at the event, stating, “At the heart of the ALA Annual Conference & Exhibition is a vibrant community of library professionals, united by a shared passion for knowledge and access.”
With a backdrop of Philadelphia’s rich history, the conference will not only celebrate literature but also highlight the essential role of libraries in shaping society. For updates on the 2025 ALA Annual Conference, follow #ALAAC25 on social media and visit www.ala.org.
