Austin is no stranger to flash floods. Nestled in the heart of Flash Flood Alley, the city faces unpredictable and rapidly changing weather patterns that can lead to dangerous flooding. To raise awareness and encourage preparedness, Austin is observing Flood Safety Awareness Week this week.
Flooding isn’t a question of “if” but “when.” As of August 2023, Austin had 5,660 active National Flood Insurance Program policies, covering $1.47 billion in property. Over the past decade, 930 claims have been paid, totaling more than $42.3 million in damages. These numbers highlight the importance of flood preparedness for residents and businesses alike.
Jorge Morales, Director of Watershed Protection, emphasizes the need for proactive measures:
“Flooding can happen fast, but being prepared can protect your family and home. This Flood Safety Awareness Week, we encourage all Austinites to sign up for alerts, make a plan, and consider flood insurance”.
Residents are encouraged to take the following steps:
- Check floodplain status: Determine if your home or workplace is in a flood-prone area.
- Sign up for emergency alerts: Register at WarnCentralTexas.org to receive real-time updates.
- Create a safety plan: Establish an emergency kit and evacuation strategy.
- Consider flood insurance: Many policies in Austin are now available at up to a 25% discount.
- Follow the “Turn Around, Don’t Drown®” rule: Never attempt to drive through flooded roads.
The Austin City Council will officially proclaim April 21-26, 2025, as Flood Safety Awareness Week during their meeting on April 24, 2025. This recognition underscores the importance of understanding flood risks and taking preventive action.
To conclude the week, the city will host Flood Safety Fest on Saturday, April 26, from 12:00-3:00 p.m. at L.L. Campbell Elementary School. The event will feature:
- Safety tips and giveaways from various city departments.
- Interactive activities for all ages.
- A special recognition ceremony for the winners of the 2025 Flood Safety Video Contest at 1pm..
Flood Safety Awareness Week serves as a reminder that preparation is key. By taking simple yet effective steps today, Austinites can protect their homes, families, and communities from the devastating effects of flooding.
