Department of Education Forms Title IX Special Investigations Team

Chicago, IL – The U.S. Department of Education has announced the formation of a new Title IX Special Investigations Team (SIT) to address complaints of Title IX violations. This initiative aims to ensure that schools across the nation uphold student rights and comply with federal law, particularly in cases involving the placement of males in women’s spaces.

The Liberty Justice Center (LJC) has commended this move, highlighting its alignment with their efforts to protect student privacy, dignity, and safety. Recently, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) initiated investigations into the Illinois Department of Education, Chicago Public Schools, and Deerfield Public Schools District 109 following a complaint filed by LJC and the Defense of Freedom Institute (DFI).

The complaint detailed significant Title IX violations, including instances where female students were pressured to share intimate spaces with a biological male, compromising their rights and safety.

Title IX is a landmark federal civil rights law in the United States, enacted as part of the Education Amendments of 1972. It states that:

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance”.
