Killeen Regional Airport Unveils Solar-Integrated Covered Parking Project

The Killeen Regional Airport (GRK) is set to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its Solar Integrated Covered Parking Project on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 2 p.m. This initiative marks a significant milestone for the airport, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and enhanced passenger convenience.

The project was made possible with funding from a $5 million Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminal Program Grant, supplemented by contributions from the Aviation Department’s Customer Facility Charge. The total cost of $7,018,065.27 encompasses solar-integrated parking for car rental and short-term parking areas, a covered canopy extension, and an LED retrofit across the entire airport.

“This is a significant step forward for the Killeen Regional Airport,” remarked Killeen Mayor Debbie Nash-King. “By investing in solar energy and modernizing our airport infrastructure, we are creating a brighter, more sustainable future for our community.”

Speakers at the event will include Mayor Nash-King, Airport Executive Director Mike Wilson, and a representative from Ameresco, Inc.—the company responsible for installing the solar panels. Ameresco, a global leader in energy solutions, has successfully completed solar projects for various high-profile venues, airports, and municipalities worldwide.

“This project provides an excellent upgrade to the customer experience and will also decrease the airport’s operational budget by lowering energy costs,” said Wilson.
