Pioneers of Motown’s First Million-Selling Single

On February 12, 1961, The Miracles made history with their single “Shop Around,” which became Motown Records’ first million-selling single. This milestone not only marked a significant achievement for the group but also solidified Motown’s place in the music industry.

The Miracles, originally known as The Five Chimes, were formed in 1955 in Detroit, Michigan. The group consisted of lead singer Smokey Robinson, Claudette Rogers Robinson, Bobby Rogers, Ronnie White, and Pete Moore. They were one of the first acts signed to Berry Gordy’s Motown Records, which was then a fledgling label.

“Shop Around” was written by Smokey Robinson and Berry Gordy. The song’s lyrics depict a mother advising her son to be selective when choosing a romantic partner. Initially, the song was recorded with a bluesy feel, but Gordy felt it needed a more commercial sound. In the early hours of the morning, The Miracles re-recorded the song with a faster tempo and a poppier arrangement.

The re-recorded version of “Shop Around” quickly gained traction, reaching number one on the Billboard R&B chart and number two on the Billboard Hot 100. It also topped the Cashbox Top 100 Pop Chart1. The song’s success was a breakthrough for both The Miracles and Motown Records, proving that the label could produce hits that resonated with a wide audience.

“Shop Around” was more than just a commercial success; it was a cultural milestone. The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2006 and is listed among The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. Its success paved the way for future Motown hits and established The Miracles as one of the label’s premier acts.

The Miracles’ “Shop Around” is a testament to the group’s talent and the visionary leadership of Berry Gordy. As Motown’s first million-selling single, it set the stage for the label’s future successes and left an indelible mark on the music industry. The legacy of The Miracles and their groundbreaking hit continues to inspire and influence artists to this day.
