The Oveta Culp Hobby Memorial Library art gallery is hosting a captivating new show by artist Shakti Sarkin, titled “Dynamic Movement: Painting and Sculpture – Abstracts and Realism.” This exhibit, running from February 4 to March 25, 2025, showcases the dynamic and colorful works of Sarkin, an artist whose life and travels have profoundly influenced her art.
Shakti Sarkin, an Ohio native, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Kent State University. Her artistic journey has taken her across the globe, living in places like Los Angeles, England, and South Africa, before settling in Austin, Texas, 27 years ago. Sarkin’s experiences and diverse cultural exposures are vividly reflected in her art, characterized by a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors and unique combinations.
In her latest show, Sarkin offers a retrospective glimpse into her various artistic phases. As she explains, “I started painting people in college and later went through a phase of painting landscapes. That was followed by a phase of painting abstracts, which was triggered by dreams of trees morphing into abstraction. The next phase was working sculpturally, using primarily wood bark and wire. In this art show, I show examples of my various artistic phases. If this body of work is seen as a symphony, the dynamic movements within it are figurative work, landscapes, abstract paintings, and abstract sculptures. My passion remains with all of these areas.”
Visitors to the exhibit will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Sarkin’s world, experiencing the vibrant and original pieces that span her diverse artistic journey. The gallery invites art enthusiasts and the community to attend the artist reception on Thursday, February 6th, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., where Sarkin will discuss her creative process and techniques.
The exhibit is free and open to the public, and it promises to be an inspiring showcase of Sarkin’s talent and vision.
