The Maestro of Melodies
Barry Manilow, the iconic singer-songwriter, has been serenading audiences for over six decades. Known for his timeless hits like “Mandy,” “Copacabana (At the Copa),” and “I Write the Songs,” Manilow’s music continues to captivate listeners around the world.
Born Barry Alan Pincus on June 17, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, Manilow’s passion for music began early in his life. He attended the City College of New York and the New York College of Music before studying musical theater at the prestigious Juilliard Performing Arts School. His career took off when he became the musical director for Bette Midler, collaborating on her early albums.
Despite facing criticism from some music critics, Manilow’s peers in the industry praised him for his work. The legendary Frank Sinatra even predicted, “He’s next,” recognizing Manilow’s potential to be a major musical force. Over the years, Manilow has earned numerous accolades, including Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Awards, solidifying his status as one of the most accomplished artists in the music industry.
One of the most fascinating stories from Manilow’s career involves his hit song “I Write the Songs.” Ironically, Manilow didn’t write this song himself; it was penned by Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys. Initially hesitant to record it, Manilow was encouraged by Arista Records owner Clive Davis, who saw the song’s potential. Despite his reservations, Manilow’s rendition of “I Write the Songs” became a chart-topping success and remains one of his most beloved tracks.
In addition to his music career, Manilow has been involved in philanthropic efforts. He established the Manilow Music Project, which supports music education and provides instruments to schools in need. His commitment to giving back has made a significant impact on many aspiring musicians.
Today, Barry Manilow continues to perform and delight audiences with his timeless music. His enduring legacy is a testament to his talent, perseverance, and dedication to his craft. As he once said, “I am music, and I write the songs,” and his melodies, indeed, make the whole world sing.
