…and the origin of Classical Gas

Mason Williams, born on August 24, 1938, in Abilene, Texas, is a multifaceted artist who’s worn many hats throughout his career—musician, composer, writer, comedian, and even poet. Among all his achievements, he’s best known for creating the iconic instrumental piece “Classical Gas.”

While working as a head writer for “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour,” Williams composed “Classical Gas.” Originally titled “Classical Gasoline,” the name was meant to signify “fuel” for classical guitarists. However, when the music copyist shortened it to “Classical Gas,” the name stuck. The song premiered on the show alongside an innovative video montage titled “3000 Years of Art.” This montage featured classical art pieces flashed rapidly on the screen, making it one of the first music videos of its kind. “

Classical Gas” became a smash hit, reaching number two on the charts in 1968 and winning three Grammy Awards in 1969. Its success catapulted Williams into the limelight showcasing his talent not just as a comedy writer but as a gifted musician and composer. The popularity of “Classical Gas” has led to it becoming one of the most performed instrumental compositions in history.

Beyond “Classical Gas,” Williams has released numerous albums, written songs for artists like The Kingston Trio, and engaged in various visual arts projects. His friend, artist Edward Ruscha, painted the cover art for Mason’s album “Music,” highlighting his knack for collaboration across different art forms. Additionally, Williams has dabbled in photography, poetry, and comedy writing, further showcasing his diverse talents. Mason Williams continues to be a celebrated figure in the arts, living in Eugene, Oregon, with his wife, Karen.
