KILLEEN – In a significant show of solidarity and support, three fire personnel from Killeen are set to deploy to Southern California this Saturday. Their mission: to assist in the ongoing battle against devastating wildfires that have led to 100,000 people being placed under evacuation orders in Los Angeles County.
This deployment comes as part of an Emergency Management Assistance Compact request, a mutual aid system facilitated by the Texas Division of Emergency Management agency. The Killeen crew will staff a fire engine to bolster the efforts of local and state fire departments in California.
“As firefighters, our commitment knows no borders,” said Killeen Fire Chief Jim Kubinski. “When communities are in crisis, we step up to support one another, no matter the distance. We are proud to lend a hand and do our part to protect lives and property.”
According to the Associated Press, there are currently four major wildfires raging across Los Angeles County, resulting in numerous casualties. In addition to the 100,000 under evacuation orders, tens of thousands more are under evacuation warnings. The fires have wreaked havoc, destroying at least 10,000 properties and scorching more than 36,000 acres.
While one fire is reported to be 70% contained, another is only 35% contained, and a third remains largely uncontrolled at 8% containment. The scale and severity of these fires necessitate additional resources and personnel, making the contribution of the Killeen fire crew invaluable.
This isn’t the first time Killeen firefighters have answered the call for aid. Just three months ago, a team of seven Killeen firefighters traveled to North Carolina and Florida to assist in hurricane relief efforts following Hurricanes Helene and Milton. That team included water rescue teams and technical search specialists, showcasing the department’s versatility and dedication.
A typical deployment for Killeen fire teams lasts 14 days, though the duration can be adjusted based on the situation’s needs. During such deployments, crews often work around the clock to provide continuous support and assistance.
