The City of Killeen has teamed up with Friends in Crisis to offer an overnight warming center at the Friends in Crisis shelter (412 East Sprott Street). The center will open its doors from 8 p.m. to 11 a.m. each day starting Sunday, January 5 through Friday, January 10. This initiative aims to provide a safe haven for those in need during the frigid nights.

According to city policy, a warming center is opened if the temperature or wind chill factor is forecasted to drop below 32 degrees. The decision, made in consultation with the National Weather Service, is announced no later than 3 p.m. on the day the center will be operational.

City of Killeen buildings such as City Hall, libraries, the Recreation Center, and Police Headquarters are always open to the public during regular business hours for warming (or cooling) purposes. Community members are reminded to adhere to a code of conduct while using these facilities.

The city emphasizes the importance of partnerships with local organizations to operate these centers. Interested parties, like churches or community groups, willing to open their facilities and provide volunteers, are encouraged to contact the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management at (254) 501-7706.
