Restoring the Independence of a Blind Veteran

COPPERAS COVE – Homes for Veterans, in collaboration with Expo Home Improvement, has proudly unveiled a transformative bathroom renovation for Elias Madrid, Sr., a blind U.S. Army veteran. This significant project not only enhances Madrid’s quality of life but also honors the sacrifices made by his multi-generational military family.

“We’re privileged to work with Expo Home Improvement to support Madrid and his remarkable family,” said Francesca DiPaola, CEO of Homes for Veterans. “This renovation not only improves Madrid’s quality of life but also honors the sacrifices made by this multi-generational military family.”

Madrid bravely served the United States from 1975 to 1988, with deployments in Korea, Fort Hood, Fort Bliss, and Germany. His service, however, came at a significant personal cost. An accident during his military service resulted in severe nerve damage, and frequent blackouts while stationed in Korea further complicated his health. By the end of his military career, diabetes had claimed his sight, leaving him blind.

Recently, Madrid suffered a stroke, confining him to a wheelchair and making everyday tasks, such as balancing, showering, and moving around his home, extremely challenging. With weakened legs, he relies entirely on his wife and son for support.

Madrid’s son, also an Army veteran, served for two decades with multiple deployments to the Middle East. He now cares for his father full-time, exemplifying the deep bond and dedication of this military family.

This transformative project was made possible through the generous support of Expo Home Improvement, a company renowned for donating its labor to local veterans in Texas. Their philanthropic focus and commitment to the veteran community ensure that individuals like Elias receive the dignity and independence they deserve. The renovation has provided a fully accessible bathroom, enabling Elias to shower safely and independently for the first time in years, thereby significantly improving his quality of life and reducing the burden on his family.

Key features of the remodel include a zero-threshold shower, ADA-compliant toilet and sink, grab bars and custom cabinetry, and non-slip flooring and new tile
