AUSTIN – With the holiday season upon us, the Austin Police Department (APD) has announced an increase in traffic and DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) enforcement. Beginning today through New Years Day, APD officers will be out in greater numbers to ensure the safety of those celebrating and traveling during this festive time.
Drive Safely and Watch Your Speed
APD reminds all residents and visitors to drive safely, obey traffic laws, and be mindful of their speed, especially as they enjoy holiday festivities with friends and family. Increased enforcement will be in effect, and officers will be vigilant in monitoring and addressing unsafe driving behaviors.
Year-Round DWI No Refusal Initiative
The department has also extended its DWI No Refusal Initiative to be a year-round effort. This means that between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday through Sunday, throughout the entire year, APD will actively enforce DWI laws. This initiative aims to keep the public safe by encouraging responsible driving decisions and obtaining blood search warrants for those who refuse to provide a breath or blood specimen, as required by law.
Focus on Highways and High-Speed Roadways
APD’s enhanced enforcement efforts will particularly target highways and high-speed roadways. The goal is to prevent accidents and save lives by cracking down on impaired and reckless driving.
Commitment to Safety
The Austin Police Department, in collaboration with the City of Austin Transportation and Public Works Department, remains committed to preventing fatalities on Austin’s streets, highways, and waterways. Through a combination of education and enforcement, they aim to make the roadways and waterways safe for both residents and visitors.
As you celebrate this holiday season, remember: Don’t drink and drive. Let’s end the streak of accidents and fatalities together. #EndTheStreakTX
Stay safe and enjoy the holidays responsibly.
