Honoring the Fallen: 15th Anniversary Fort Hood Memorial Ceremony
Tuesday, November 5, 2024
Dear KNCT Community,
This morning, our team had the honor of attending the 15th Anniversary Fort Hood Memorial Ceremony, a solemn event dedicated to remembering the lives lost on November 5, 2009, at Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood). The ceremony took place at the Fort Hood Memorial Pavilion, where families, community members, and leaders gathered to pay tribute to the 13 individuals who lost their lives in a tragic shooting on post, and to stand in unity with their loved ones and those still affected by this day.
The event was hosted by the Friends of November 5, 2009 Memorial Committee, with Killeen Mayor Debbie Nash-King and Brigadier General Robert G. Born, Deputy Commanding General-Support for the 1st Cavalry Division, delivering heartfelt remarks. Their words served as powerful reminders of the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of the fallen, affirming our duty to honor their memories and the community deeply impacted by this tragedy.
A Ceremony of Remembrance and Reflection
Attendees gathered under a sky where gray clouds parted to let rays of sunlight shine over the event, creating a poignant atmosphere. The Killeen Police and Fire Department Honor Guard began the ceremony with a moving Posting of the Colors, followed by SSG Erica Reid-Brown’s stirring rendition of the National Anthem. Brigadier General Born shared, “It is our sacred duty that we never forget the price they paid in service for our country.” His words captured the spirit of the day, a reminder to hold the memory of these heroes close and continue supporting those they left behind.
As part of the tribute, the names of each fallen individual were read aloud, with a moment of silence observed by all. Community leaders, local dignitaries, and family members of the fallen stood together, showing unwavering support and compassion.
The final note of the ceremony was marked by a moving performance of TAPS by Arthur Bryan, Commander of the Korean War Veterans Association Don C. Faith (MOH) Chapter 222. The solemn sound of his trumpet resonated through the pavilion, a final farewell and a lasting reminder of the service and sacrifice of those we lost.
Continuing the Legacy
This ceremony, organized by dedicated members of the Friends of November 5 Memorial Committee, including Mayor Nash-King and former Killeen Mayor Tim Hancock, was a profound display of our community’s strength and resilience. Every year, this remembrance serves as a testament to the enduring impact these individuals have left on Fort Cavazos and the Killeen community.
As KNCT 91.3 FM, we’re committed to sharing these moments that honor our local heroes, support their families, and keep their memories alive in our hearts and community.
Thank you for joining us in honoring the lives lost, reflecting on their legacy, and standing with the Fort Cavazos community.
With respect,
KNCT 91.3 FM
