Good morning, from our studio on the campus of Central Texas College in Killeen, my name is Gary Emmert and this is the Senior Report

On the Waterfront, winner of eight Academy Awards and starring Marlon Brando was released on this day in 1954.

And on this day in 2024…

It’s mosquito season and the City of Killeen shared some valuable information to help #FightTheBite this summer.

➡ Apply insect repellent to exposed skin and clothing.

➡ Keep mosquitoes out of your home by using screens and air conditioning.

➡ Reduce mosquito habitats by emptying or throwing away items and containers that hold water.

➡ When weather permits, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants to reduce mosquito bites.

➡ Protect your pets with veterinarian-approved mosquito repellents.

For those of you who don’t know, I retired from the Army in 2013 after serving over 21 years and 8 of those as a member of the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood. I bring them up because the 1st Cavalry Division Association is collecting stories from members to memorialize the history of their experience. If you are interested in membership with the 1st Cavalry Division Association, their number is (877) 562-6078 or visit their website at 1cda.org.

The Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum, 315 W. Avenue B, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The special exhibit, “Yosemite People,” is on display now through Aug. 17. The popular event Kittens in the Library returns July 30th to the Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. Eighth St.

Kittens from the Georgetown Animal Shelter will turn up the charm to play, snuggle, and purr their way into a new family. Kittens will be available for adoption from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Adoption fees are $35 per kitten during the event, and kittens will be able to leave directly from the event. Cardboard carriers will be provided.

The shelter is the municipal animal shelter for the city and takes in all stray and surrendered animals from within the city limits. Even as the city grows exponentially, the shelter has maintained a save-rate of 90 percent or more for ten years this October, classifying the shelter as a no-kill shelter.

The animal shelter currently has many kittens and cats, and staff hopes the event at the library will help them find new homes. In past years, 20-25 kittens were adopted during the two-hour event.

The Georgetown Animal Shelter is located at 110 W.L. Walden Drive. For more information about the shelter, visit pets.georgetown.org.
