Moon and Saturn

Viewed edge-on, Saturn’s beautiful rings form a thin horizontal line in this image from the Cassini spacecraft. The rings span almost 200,000 miles, but for most of that distance they are no more than a few dozen feet thick. The rings cast shadows on Saturn’s atmosphere at the top of the image.

Tragic Discoveries

Most of the ocean floor is more poorly mapped than the surfaces of the Moon or Mars. That fact has been highlighted by the search for Malaysian Airlines flight 370, which vanished in 2014. Investigators concluded that it crashed into the southern Indian Ocean. But the search was hampered by the lack of good maps of the ocean floor.

Mule Skinner Blues

A muleskinner’s job was not quite as…grim as it sounds. They were mule-drivers, or, in the cheeriest sense, muleteers! However, the skinner part of the title does refer to their ability to whip the animals so hard that the skin was broken. So still kinda grim.
