Today is Wednesday, March 22, 2023, the 81st day of the year with 284 days remaining until the end of the year. Here is everything you need to know about today’s programs on KNCT, but first…
March is Brain Injury Awareness Month and now is the time to get up to speed on the symptoms, because 50% of people who experience a possible concussion don’t get it checked.

Dr. Beth McQuiston, medical director in Abbott’s diagnostics business and board-certified neurologist, and Kathy Dieringer, NATA president, sat down and talked to us about the following:
- The concussion signs and symptoms everyone needs to know about
- Why you should never just walk off a hit to the head
- How parents and coaches can help protect their kids and athletes (only 32% of public schools have an athletic trainer on staff)
- The top myths about where and how concussions happen
- The best steps to take if you suspect a concussion
Abbott and NATA are part of a newly formed coalition called Concussion Awareness Now – comprised of nearly 20 advocacy groups in the brain injury space, the coalition is working toward a future where every person with a concussion receives a diagnosis, the best possible care and the resources and information they need to take care of their health.
More About Dr. Beth McQuiston:
Dr. Beth McQuiston is a board-certified neurologist, registered dietitian and medical director for Abbott’s diagnostics business. She actively participates in the evaluation of a number of neuroscience-related biomarkers to be used in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease. Her current areas of focus include research into biomarkers for use in traumatic brain injury, including concussions.
More About Kathy Dieringer:

If you’re an astronomer who studies faint, wispy objects like spiral galaxies, then this is your time to shine. The Moon was new yesterday, so it doesn’t fill the sky with its glow. With the pesky moonlight out of the way, those faint galaxies will shine at their best.

StarDate airs every weekday at 5:57 am, 4:57 pm, and on weekends at 8:20 am.

EarthDate – Older Than Methuselah
The oldest individual trees are conifers—but they’re not the famous sequoias. Some of those exceed 3,000 years. But bristlecone pines are centuries, even millennia, older.

EarthDate airs every weekday at 9:30 am, 3:30 pm, and weekends at 10:30 am.
Science and the Sea – Skin Power
It sounds like the start of a bad joke: What do an airplane wing and shark skin have in common? But a recent study suggests there’s a serious answer. Both of them provide a type of “lift” — one to get an airplane off the ground, the other to increase the shark’s speed.

Science and the Sea airs every weekday at 10:30 am, 2:30 pm, and weekends at 11:30 am.
SoundBeat – Oh Captain, My Captain
You’re listening to Walter Huston recite the words of Walt Whitman in a Decca recording from 1947 and…
You’re on the Sound Beat.
Whitman published his famous elegy to Abraham Lincoln in “Sequel to Drum-Taps”, an 1865 pamphlet containing 18 poems about the American Civil War as well as “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d”. Who said self-publishing doesn’t work?
If you are going to publish your work on your own, you’ve got to have artistic and editorial vision. Whitman kept revising the poem, even after publication, and even corrected newspaper editors for using earlier versions.

SoundBeat airs every weekday at 11:30 am and 1:30pm.
Rick Smith joins us every Wednesday and Friday at 6:15 pm for On the Dock, keeping us up to date on hunting, fishing and outdoor safety news and events happening in our listening area. Rick also keeps us abreast on information published by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Each episode is also available to hear in the podcast section of our KNCT.org streaming website as well as the homepage for this site.
