StarDate – Galactic Fossils

Green Peas are like living fossils. Not the hard little nuggets that get overzapped in the microwave. These are small, busy galaxy nuggets. Astronomers have found several of them in the modern universe. But in its very first picture, James Webb Space Telescope found some in deep space — when the universe was less than a billion years old. That makes the close ones living fossils — as one astronomer described them, the coelacanths of galaxies.

StarDate airs every weekday at 5:57 am, 4:57 pm, and on weekends at 8:20 am.

The Sound of Texas – John Scott of Big Spring

Pints for Polio, details on the Sound of Texas.

The Sound of Texas airs every weekday at 6:30 am and 12:30 pm.

EarthDate – Sauropod-Sized Tractors

Heavy farm equipment is now as heavy as the heaviest dinosaurs—and, surprisingly, there may be some similarities.

Today, a fully loaded combine weighs 60,000 pounds—or more!

Engineers have worked to distribute their increasing weight across the soil, widening the tires, sometimes putting three tires on each hub.

The John Deere 9560R is a 4WD articulated combine weighing in at 21.7 tons. Fully loaded it can weigh up to 30 tons. This three-wheel-per-hub model spreads the load to enable working in wet environments. It measures 24 feet (7.24meters) long x 14 feet (4.37meters) wide x 12.5 feet (3.67meters) high. Each tire is 31 inches (79.5 centimeters) wide and nearly 7 feet (81.9 inches or 208 centimeters) tall.

EarthDate airs every weekday at 9:30 am, 3:30 pm, and weekends at 10:30 am.

Science and the Sea – New Jellyfish

Like an attic that hasn’t been explored in decades, the deep ocean is a big mystery. It’s inhabited by many species of life that we’ve never seen—perhaps millions of them. Yet scientists are picking through the stacks and boxes—finding new species all the time.

Science and the Sea airs every weekday at 10:30 am, 2:30 pm, and weekends at 11:30 am.

SoundBeat – Eleven-Cent Cotton, Forty-Cent Meat

The first part of the 20th century was actually considered the Golden Age of American farming. War-torn Europe was unable to feed itself, and US farms raced to fill the void, expanding along the way. When World War 1 ended in 1918, so did the drastic need for American produce. The over-abundance of crops and a stagnant market led to inflation, and situations like Eleven-Cent Cotton and Forty-Cent Meat. Here’s Vernon Dalhart from 1929.

There’s a funny story behind Dalhart’s name.

SoundBeat airs every weekday at 10:30 am and 1:30pm.

Laury Sisko, KNCT’s Membership Director, joins us every Monday at 6:15 pm for Community Contact. Beginning at 7 pm, KNCT presents part two of “Women In Congress.” “Women in Congress” is a documentary public affairs presentation produced by Dr. Robert Franklin, KNCT-FM General Manager.  The documentary takes a historical look at the role of women in the political process from the election of Jeannette Rankin, a Representative from Montana in 1916, to Shirley Chisholm’s election as the Democratic Representative from New York in 1968. The documentary explored the plight of female members in the United States Congress in the Republican and Democratic party.

Program Number Two explores the challenges Congresswomen encountered seeking elective office. Some of those challenges included fundraising, childcare, and health care.
