StarDate – Orion Sieve

The Orion Nebula is one of the most remarkable regions in our part of the galaxy. It’s a giant complex of clouds of gas and dust that are forming new stars. So far, it’s given birth to thousands of them, of all sizes. And many more are taking shape even now. But some of those stars are starting to shut down the process.

StarDate airs every weekday at 5:57 am, 4:57 pm, and on weekends at 8:20 am.

The Sound of Texas – Sam Fiester of Georgetown

Another movie from Sam Fiester, details on the Sound of Texas.

The Sound of Texas airs every weekday at 6:30 am and 12:30 pm.

EarthDate – First Map of the Ocean Floor

Until Marie Tharp came along, no one knew what the seafloor really looked like.

It was long thought to be a featureless plain of mud.

Then sonar, invented in World War II, began to give us a glimpse. But it could only “read” the bottom of the ocean right below the ship’s path.

Marie Tharp earned master’s degrees in geology and mathematics in the 1940’s and joined the navy to study the seafloor—but women were not allowed on research ships.

Marie Tharp’s map helped vindicate Earth’s dynamic system of plate tectonics, but her work was initially dismissed as “girl talk.”

EarthDate airs every weekday at 8:30 am, 3:30 pm, and weekends at 10:30 am.

Science and the Sea – Unexpected Seabirds

Falcons are among the most majestic creatures on Earth, soaring easily over mountains, forests, and other regions. For one species, the “other regions” include the icy waters around Greenland, where they can spend weeks at a time at sea.
