StarDate – Comet Kohoutek

Comets are as fickle as the weather — and just as hard to predict. A prime example is Comet Kohoutek. It was discovered in a picture shot 50 years ago today. And early predictions said it could become the “Comet of the Century.” Instead, it was a public relations bust. It became barely visible to the unaided eye, but most people never saw it.

StarDate airs every weekday at 5:57 am, 4:57 pm, and on weekends at 8:20 am.

The Sound of Texas – Al Harvey of Dayton

In this episode, Tumbleweed Smith talks to a gentlemen who started a mobile tire service after working for Goodyear for decades.

The Sound of Texas airs every weekday at 6:30 am and 12:30 pm.

The Sound of Texas airs every weekday at 6:30 am and 12:30 pm.

EarthDate – Pacific Ring of Fire

When the explorer Ferdinand Magellan finally made it ‘round the treacherous horn of South America in 1521, the ocean beyond seemed especially calm—so he named it the peaceful sea: Mare pacificum, the Pacific Ocean.

EarthDate airs every weekday at 8:30 am, 3:30 pm, and weekends at 10:30 am.

Science and the Sea – Rip Currents

A hidden killer can lurk along the coastline, ready to pull unsuspecting swimmers out to sea. It’s not a great white shark, though —or a creature of any kind, for that matter. Instead, it’s a rip current — a narrow channel of water that flows away from the beach, catching unprepared swimmers.

Science and the Sea airs every weekday at 9:30 am, 2:30 pm, and weekends at 11:30 am.

SoundBeat – Coolidge Welcomes Lindbergh

The 30th president of the United States, bestowing the Flying Cross on Charles Lindbergh. The speech took place in Washington DC on June 11, 1927, just three weeks after Lindy’s achievement. Lindy’s humorous remarks drew laughter from the crowd but he’d leave a bigger mark on the public’s perception of flight. In 1926, the year before his flight, about 6,000 Americans traveled by air. Less than two years later the number had swelled to 180,000!

SoundBeat airs every weekday at 10:30 am and 1:30pm.

Cindy Oser, Outreach and Reference Librarian for Central Texas College’s Oveta Culp Hobby Memorial Library, joins us every Tuesday at 6:15 pm to update us on upcoming events and services on campus. Each episode is also available to hear in the podcast section of our KNCT.org streaming website as well as the homepage for this site.

Beginning at 7 pm, KNCT presents part two of “Still Going On.” “Still Going On” is an award-winning, four-part, hour long award-winning radio documentary saluting William Grant Still and other African-American composers. Still, often referred to as “the Dean” of African American composers, composed more than 150 works including 5 symphonies and 8 operas.

Born in Mississippi, he grew up in Little Rock Arkansas, and attended Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio.
