CCISD Expands Career Pathways With 11 New Courses, Approves 2026–27 Calendar

During Tuesday night’s regular meeting, the CCISD Board of Trustees approved 11 new courses across five career programs, all set to launch in the 2026–27 school year.

Superintendent Dr. Brent Hawkins said the additions reflect both student interest and the district’s long‑standing commitment to hands‑on learning.

“More than 60% of our high schoolers want to learn skills, crafts and trades, rather than attend a four‑year college,” Hawkins said. “Expanding our career program offerings into these fields, all the way down to 7th grade, provides opportunities for every student to find their passion.”

New Courses Across Engineering, Construction, Hospitality, and Public Service

The board approved a wide range of new offerings:

  • Engineering
    • Engineering Design Process (Grades 7–12)
    • Intermediate Computer‑Aided Design & Drafting (High School)
    • Engineering Design and Presentation (High School)
  • Construction Science (Grades 10–12)
    • Electrical Technology I & II
    • Plumbing Technology I & II
  • Hospitality & Tourism
    • Hotel Management (High School)
    • Event & Meeting Planning (High School)
    • Hospitality Services (Grades 10–12)
  • Law & Public Service
    • Emergency Medical Technician (Grades 11–12)

These additions build on a CTE program that already offers 45 industry certifications across 12 career tracks—the most within a 60‑minute radius.

“We hope parents see that when they make The Cove Choice, they see a school district dedicated to helping every student succeed not just while they are in school, but through their life beyond graduation,” Hawkins said.

Trustees Approve 2026–27 Academic Calendar

The board also unanimously approved the 2026–27 school calendar. Students will begin classes on August 17, 2026, with the final day set for May 26, 2027.

Key breaks include:

  • Thanksgiving Break: Nov. 23–27
  • Christmas Break: Dec. 21–Jan. 1
  • Spring Break: March 15–19
  • Bad Weather Make‑Up Days: Feb. 15 and May 10

“We know that parents are already planning ahead for next year,” Hawkins said. “We wanted to get this calendar out early so families and staff can prepare.”

Dual Credit Partnerships Strengthened

Trustees also approved dual‑credit partnerships with Tarleton State University and Coastal Bend College for next school year. The agreement with Coastal Bend marks a new partnership for CCISD, while the Tarleton partnership was renewed.

Upcoming Meetings

The CCISD Board of Trustees will next meet for a Workshop/Special Called Meeting on March 9, followed by its Regular Meeting on March 23. Both sessions begin at 6 p.m. at the District Service & Training Center.
