Community Mourns After Three Brothers Die in Pond Accident Near Bonham

A quiet stretch of Rec Road #3, just outside Bonham, became the center of a heartbreaking tragedy on January 26, when three young brothers fell through the ice on a private pond. The boys, ages 6, 8, and 9, had been playing near the frozen water when the ice gave way, prompting an urgent call that drew a swift and coordinated response from agencies across the region.

First responders from multiple local and state departments raced to the scene. The 8‑ and 9‑year‑old brothers were pulled from the frigid water by arriving personnel and a nearby resident who rushed in to help. Emergency crews immediately began lifesaving measures before transporting both children by ambulance to a local hospital.

The youngest brother, just 6 years old, did not resurface. Texas Game Wardens conducted an extensive search of the pond, ultimately recovering the child. Despite the efforts of all involved, all three boys were later pronounced deceased.

Authorities are withholding the children’s names to protect the family’s privacy during an unimaginably difficult time.

In a joint statement, the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Game Wardens expressed deep gratitude for the rapid response and teamwork shown by the Bonham Fire Department, Bonham Police Department, Lamar County emergency responders, Fannin County Emergency Management, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and community members who stepped forward without hesitation.

As the community grieves, local officials and neighbors alike are keeping the family in their thoughts and prayers, reflecting on a tragedy that has touched every corner of Fannin County.
