Several events and construction activities scheduled over the upcoming holiday weekend will require temporary road closures in Austin. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, use alternate routes, and consider alternative transportation options.
Spurs Austin International Half Marathon – Sunday, January 18
The Spurs Austin International Half Marathon will take place Sunday from 6 to 11 a.m. The 13.1‑mile race begins on Stonelake Boulevard in northwest Austin and concludes east of the State Capitol. The event will prompt multiple street closures throughout west and central Austin. Travelers are advised to review the course map and plan routes that avoid the race area. Transportation and parking details are available on the Austin Center for Events website.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day March, Festival and Food Drive – Monday, January 19
The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration will occur Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day begins with a rally at 9:30 a.m. on the south steps of the State Capitol, followed by a march along 11th Street to the Huston‑Tillotson University campus. A festival and community food drive will take place on campus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Route maps and transportation information can be found on the Austin Center for Events website.
East Cesar Chavez Street Closure – January 15–19
A separate road closure will affect downtown traffic later this week. East Cesar Chavez Street between Trinity Street and Red River Street will be closed from the early morning of January 15 through the evening of January 19. The closure is required to safely dismantle a tower crane associated with the Waterline development.

The City of Austin recommends the following detours during the closure:
- Eastbound traffic: Use northbound Congress Avenue, Brazos Street, or San Jacinto Boulevard, then proceed to East Fifth Street to access I‑35.
- Westbound traffic: Use northbound I‑35 and exit onto East Sixth Street.
Drivers should expect delays in the affected areas and follow all posted signs and detour instructions.
