Texas Folklife is entering a new chapter in its statewide cultural work with the appointment of Sunny Sauceda as its new Deputy Director. The role marks both a moment of growth for the organization and a reaffirmation of its commitment to community‑centered leadership rooted in lived experience and long‑standing relationships across Texas.

Sauceda will work closely with Executive Director Dr. Elisha R. Oliver and the Texas Folklife staff to advance the organization’s mission of preserving, presenting, and celebrating the living traditions that shape the state’s cultural landscape. His work will focus on strengthening programs, deepening partnerships, and supporting the artists, educators, and culture bearers who sustain Texas’ diverse heritage.

“Sunny has long been part of the heartbeat of this organization,” said Dr. Oliver. “This role recognizes what he already brings—deep cultural knowledge, generosity of spirit, and a genuine commitment to artists and communities. I’m excited to continue this work together in a way that feels aligned, collaborative, and grounded in our shared values.”

A respected cultural leader and award‑winning musician, Sauceda has built a career centered on mentorship, intergenerational learning, and the vitality of traditional music. His appointment reflects Texas Folklife’s belief that leadership grows from trust, experience, and authentic connection to the communities being served.

“I’m honored to step into this role with Texas Folklife,” Sauceda said. “This organization has always been about people, stories, and community. I look forward to continuing to support the artists and culture bearers who make this work meaningful.”

As Deputy Director, Sauceda will help guide program development, partner engagement, and organizational planning. His work will place special emphasis on youth learning, intergenerational exchange, and expanding public access to folk and traditional arts. The goal, he says, is to ensure that Texas Folklife remains responsive, connected, and accountable to the communities it represents.

Sauceda is no stranger to the organization. Over the years, he has played a key role in connecting audiences to the stories, histories, and traditions behind Texas music and cultural practices. In this expanded position, he will continue championing culture bearers while supporting the organization’s evolving needs.

His appointment comes at a time of continued momentum for Texas Folklife, as the organization broadens its education initiatives, strengthens its documentation work, and creates new opportunities for Texans to engage with the traditions that make the state a mosaic of cultures.
