The Killeen City Council on Tuesday approved two interlocal agreements that will allow the city to once again host a regional household hazardous waste collection event.

Under the first agreement, the Central Texas Council of Governments (CTCOG) will provide $25,000 toward the cost of the event, with the City of Killeen covering the remaining expenses. A second agreement with the City of Harker Heights will add an additional $5,000 to support operational and disposal costs.

The annual collection event is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the Killeen Special Events Center, located at 3301 S. WS Young Drive.

Last year’s event drew 476 participants from three counties, with the majority coming from Killeen and Harker Heights. City officials noted that the turnout reflected strong regional demand for safe and accessible hazardous waste disposal options.

This year’s event will accept a range of household hazardous materials, including paints, pesticides, herbicides, cleaning products, petroleum products, antifreeze, used oils, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, batteries, and various chemicals and acids. Residents are encouraged to bring items in their original containers and ensure they are securely packed to prevent spills during transport.

Items that will not be accepted include tires, electronics, fire alarms, smoke detectors, explosives, and pressurized containers.

The collection is part of CTCOG’s ongoing hazardous waste events across Central Texas and is open to residents of Bell, Coryell, Hamilton, Lampasas, Milam, Mills, and San Saba counties. Participants will be required to show proof of residency.

More information about acceptable materials is available at KilleenTexas.gov/Recycle.
