The City of Killeen, in partnership with Friends in Crisis, will continue operating a warming center as freezing temperatures persist across the region.
Friends in Crisis, located at 412 E. Sprott Street, will open its doors again on Tuesday, Dec. 30, beginning at 3 p.m. and remaining available overnight until 8 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31. The center is open to anyone in the community who needs a safe, warm place to stay, including residents without heat or those experiencing power outages. The facility has already operated during the same hours on Sunday, Dec. 28, and Monday, Dec. 29.
Under city policy, warming centers are activated when temperatures or wind chill values are forecast to reach 32 degrees or below. With cold conditions expected to continue, the city has extended operations through Tuesday night.
In addition to the warming center, several city buildings will remain open during regular business hours for residents seeking relief from the cold. These locations include City Hall, public libraries, the First National Bank Texas Recreation Center, police headquarters, and other public facilities. Visitors are asked to follow the City’s code of conduct while using these spaces. Although daytime temperatures may rise above freezing, wind chills are expected to stay low, making these facilities a reliable option for warmth.
Residents interested in donating supplies to support warming center operations may contact the City of Killeen Office of Homeland Security.
